Are you going home for the holidays?
People often ask what holidays on the road look like. Friends and family ask almost every year if we are going home.
We Are Already Home
No; we are not going “home” since we are always already home. We spend the holidays wherever we happen to be parked for that time. Flying is out of the question because we have two dogs and then one of us would be with them when the other is somewhere else.
We do make a point of seeing loved ones at other times of the year by driving through New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, etc.
Our Own Traditions
Before living in an RV, we didn’t often see family for the holidays. After college we moved 8 hours away from family. So we came up with new holiday traditions which included spending time with friends and enjoying a delicious Chinese or Indian meal together.
This year we enjoyed Christmas Eve dining on cioppino at the Atlantis in Reno. Christmas Day we stayed home, I did a bit of sewing and Andrew worked on the plans for our new property in Minnesota while we waited for more snow. The day after we went out to Truckee for a beautiful afternoon of snowshoeing!
I highly recommend whether living in an RV and traveling or just in a town far from family to come up with your own traditions. Personally, I like it better this way. We can visit my family other times of the year when fewer people are flying. We both really enjoy skipping the stress of unnecessary travel and large family gatherings. We love our holidays on the road!
